Located on the historic site of the former RSL in Melbourne CBD, the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust (HMST) head office spans three floors and opens up onto one of Melbourne’s lively laneways.
With their lease coming to an end, the HMST engaged Guymer Bailey Architects to design and deliver a new corporate office that would reflect the values of the not-for-profit organisation. With four short months to organise the design, tender and construction of the project to ensure occupancy before the end of their lease agreement, we undertook a full refurbishment, overcoming numerous challenges including building services distribution, uncovering a leaking rooftop courtyard, and Disability Discrimination Act compliance.
As you walk inside the HMST head office you are greeted with a simple, yet elegant interior that enhances natural light, and pays tribute to the historic structure of the building. The walls showcase HMST’s unique collection of indigenous artwork, and the boardroom, a key focal point in the office, features custom designed cabinetry with marble bench tops, vibrant geometric wallpaper and a large glass tribute honouring the late Founder, Helen Macpherson Schutt (née Smith).
