Community architecture plays an essential role in our lives and history. From local necessities like libraries, community centres, sporting hubs and churches, to cultural icons and tourism greats, they capture our community values and hold many of our defining moments.

With more than 30 years’ experience designing community architecture including community centres, interpretive and arts centres, sporting facilities and parks and open spaces, at Guymer Bailey Architects we are dedicated to creating functional, sustainable, and enduring public architecture that welcomes the community in to live out a small part of their lives there.

We design desirable and comfortable spaces, facilities and landscapes that are inviting to visitors and provide a physical and visual connection between architecture and landscape to positively affect health and wellbeing.

This integrated approach between architecture, landscape architecture and design is well suited to community projects as we develop a considered approach to strategic site planning that is contextually appropriate and well suited to the location.

To ensure community buildings and spaces make a positive difference to the community now and into the future, we take a consultative approach to the design, working with stakeholders and user groups to understand their needs and develop creative, cost-effective solutions.

When designing each community project our expert team considers the following:

  • Community enjoyment and interaction designing fun, desirable and comfortable community spaces, facilities and landscapes that enhance user experience.

  • Unique, flexible designs that consider future uses and the local climate.

  • Social and cultural context to ensure projects inspire positive attitudes, behaviours and emotional responses in users and communicate the value of society and cultural diversity.

  • Connection to the environment providing a seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, connecting to the surrounding landscape.

  • Durable, hardwearing building materials to increase the longevity of buildings, prevent damage and enhance the security and safety of users.

  • Sustainable measures to decrease operational costs and minimise environmental impact using natural light, ventilation, and energy-efficient building services.

Having designed many public spaces for communities for both local and state governments, our team also has extensive experience in creating purposeful and engaging community architecture within the timeframes set by Government funding models.
